Samsung 4nm Yield Hits 70%, Eyes AMD Partnership and Challenges TSMC’s Dominance

Samsung’s foundry division reports a significant stride in its Samsung 4nm yield chip manufacturing, achieving a commendable 70% yield as of October. While slightly trailing TSMC in yield percentages, Samsung is determined to match its Taiwanese counterpart, intensifying the competition for market dominance and client acquisition.

In a strategic move, Samsung aims to diversify its clientele by courting AMD for future processors, particularly the mass production of AMD’s Zen 5c chips on the Samsung 4nm yield node. This potential collaboration not only strengthens Samsung’s market position but also opens avenues for future partnerships, especially with the application of its cutting-edge 3nm GAA technology.

Industry experts, including Kim Yang-paeng from the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade, highlight Samsung’s golden opportunity to expand its market share, emphasizing the allure of its 3nm GAA node. Recent reports suggest that Samsung’s 3nm GAA yields are nearing the crucial 70% mark, boosting confidence among potential clients, such as Qualcomm. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, initially rumored to be on TSMC’s N3E process, could potentially sway towards Samsung’s offerings.

While TSMC currently boasts Apple as its sole 3nm customer, Samsung aims to capitalize on the market by showcasing the capabilities of its 3nm GAA node. Despite hesitations among clients due to increased costs associated with the 3nm process, Samsung sees an opportunity to impress and potentially shift orders away from TSMC.

As the semiconductor landscape evolves, Samsung’s strides in yield percentages and technology advancements position it as a formidable contender, challenging TSMC’s monopoly and paving the way for diverse partnerships in the competitive chip manufacturing industry.
